Why We Should All Be Eating More Fish & Chips

Apart from being utterly delicious [which is obvious!] what are some of the other reasons that we should all be eating more fish & chips? Well, we thought it would be good to look at some of the reasons behind why we should all be eating more of this classic dish which is still the nation’s favourite take away.

It’s healthier than other takeaways:

Seriously! Fish & Chips on average have 9.42 grams of fat per 100 grams, while the average pizza has 11, chicken korma 15.5 and a donner kebab a whopping 16.2. In terms of calories, fish and chips have 595 in an average portion, an average pizza has 871, chicken korma 910 and a donner kebab 924. And that is just in terms of fat content and calories per meal, NHS guidelines are that a healthy diet should include at least 2 portions of fish a week. One portion of fish and chips provides vitamin C, B6, and B12, some Iron, Zinc and Calcium, as well as Iodine, Omega 3 fatty acid and some important dietary fiber.

They’re a national treasure:

What are some of the things that come to mind when you think of Britain- rain, the Queen, tea, fish & chips. Fish & chips have been a part of our national diet since the 1800s. There is some controversy about who has the oldest fish & chip shop in the UK but what we can agree on is how popular fish and chips became over time! In the 1930s fish & chips had become so popular that one shop in Bradford had to employ a doorman to control the queue at busy times and during the Second World War fish & chips were considered so important they were among the few foods that weren’t rationed! But as time has gone on fish & chips have remained one of the nation’s favourite takeaways, with over 382 million portions produced every year and approximately 10,500 specialist fish & chips shops in the country, that works out as 8 for every 1 McDonald’s outlet in the UK!

There are delicious:

As obvious as this may be, it can never be stated enough, it doesn’t matter how you have yours,

If you have cod or haddock…

Mushy peas or beans…

Salt and vinegar or tartar sauce…

Curry sauce or a tomato sauce…

Chip butty or just bread and butter on the side….

Fish & chips are delicious!
